The Public Service Announcement Poster Series raises awareness about the signs of intimate partner violence, helping people recognize the difference between protective and abusive behaviors in relationships. This series sparks important conversations and provides support for those in need, featuring a clear call to action with the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
The posters use stark, impactful black-and-white imagery to create a strong emotional connection with the audience. In one design, a woman stares at her reflection, symbolizing the
self-doubt and confusion often felt by victims of abuse. Another poster shows a couple with a curtain between them,
representing the hidden nature of control and manipulation
in abusive relationships. Typography plays a key role,
with Aptly Medium Italic chosen for its informal yet serious
tone, making the message clear and direct.
Bold red text, such as “Protective or Abusive?” and “Caring or Controlling?” grabs attention against the monochrome backgrounds, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.
The color palette uses bold contrasts to amplify the message: Stop Light Red emphasizes urgency and danger, while Pitch Black and Pearl White provide a balanced, sober tone. These colors enhance the emotional weight of the posters, underscoring the importance of the subject.
This project delivers a powerful and visually cohesive public awareness campaign, addressing the critical issue of intimate partner violence. It encourages viewers to reflect on their relationships and empowers those experiencing abuse to seek help, offering a clear, supportive message throughout the design.
